A Journey Through Web 2.0 Hell
There is always an FNG somewhere asking a stupid question, right? The thing is, I never thought it would be me.
I came into the Internet marketing and home business industry just over 2 years ago. I thought I knew, but I didn’t know jack. PPC, CPC, ROI… I got one for you, how about WTF! I came into a digital world full of terminology and acronyms I’ve never heard of before.
So, I set out to teach myself.
The Newb Education
I bought books on AdWords, Network Marketing, Internet Marketing, NLP, Creating PowerPoints, The Secret… you know us Internuts have to have something about The Secret. All these things helped, but nothing prepares you like real world marketing. Dropped $4,000 on a home business, put $3,000 a month into PPC advertising. It brought me a great return, but it was destined to run out of steam, and it did.
I hit the books again, including some online resources, and in that first year I taught myself HTML, how to create a website, how to optimize that website, how to get websites ranked in the major search engines, domain names, link building, the list goes on. From that point until about 5 months ago, I was SEOing my sites and trying very hard to create new content to keep them fresh for the bots. I call it Old School Marketing now, but I got really good at it, or so I thought.
A Lesson in Modeling
Even after all the hours of R&D, I couldn’t get my websites to page 1 on Google. I mean how hard is it? So I decided to ask for help. Who better to ask than someone who’s already doing it… I emailed the webmasters of the top 3 websites for my keywords. One responded, Mr. Sonny Wylie.
Mr. Wylie was kind enough to contact me and lend a helping hand. Little did I know, I was in for a rude awakening. I quickly learned that Old School Marketing was NOT at the leading edge anymore, Sonny opened an entirely new marketing world to me. He is a fast talking, no-nonsense businessman on a mission. To dominate the competition, I was lucky to have found such a person.
In the following few weeks, Mr. Wylie introduced me to Web 2.0, Social Bookmarking, and Story Submission Websites. Holy crap my head was spinning. He bombarded me with websites to view, documents to read, and methods to learn. Mind you, I hadn’t a clue what the hell he was talking about, but I tried my damnedest to assimilate the stuff he presented.

After a few weeks, the light began to shine. It was all beginning to make sense, and I was utterly dumbfounded at the possibilities. This was definitely cutting edge, no one in my industry had a clue about these methods, which is why we had a verbal contract that stated I would never reveal these marketing techniques.
Here was my hell; Web 2.0 presented new marketing methods and new terminology. I couldn’t keep up, so I bolted. I was overwhelmed and confused. The information was coming faster than the comprehension, I needed time to hash through all the info and truly understand what was going on. Many times I was so close to giving up and completely turning my back on social marketing. Had I threw in the towel, my business would have suffered drastically both now and years into the future.
It was the simple things that confused me. Phrases like “Buzz your content,” “submit your story,” “Trackbacks,” and “Linkbaiting” struck fear in my heart because I just didn’t know what it all meant, and more importantly how to weave all these tools together to better my business. I’m a perfectionist so not “getting it” frustrated me to no end. So I closed and locked the office door, turned on my desklamp and began soaking up every last bit of information I could find on Web 2.0 and Social Marketing.
4 months later I emerged knowledgable and confident. I wanted to test out these new techniques, so I ran a simple campaign for a friends home business. The project took me 5 hours to complete, it took Google about 5 days to index my entire campaign. I’ve successfully dominated page 1 of Google for those keywords, which is to say all the top 10 results plus about 5 of page 2. Not just ONE position, but ALL positions on page 1.
Most marketers are getting more and more familiar with social bookmarking, story submissions, and other web 2.0 properties. But, the fact is this; if you don’t know how to mesh the entire shebang, you won’t get the same results.
